Artificial Intelligence (AI) dominates the news, today. The power and capabilities of AI are rapidly expanding, threatening the jobs of knowledge workers and shrinking the time for solving complex problems. Do humans have a mental capability that is superior to AI?

According to author Angus Fletcher, the answer is yes. As part of humans' evolutionary adaptation, they have an ability that will never be matched by AI.

AI can't match humans' intuitive and imaginative ability to project into the future, because AI's database is rooted in the past. AI can't match strategic decision making by skilled humans.

Angus Fletcher is a professor of story science at Ohio State University's Project Narrative. Primal Intelligence presents Fletcher's research into humans' special capabilities, including story telling.

Primal Intelligence is largely based on the training program of U.S. Army Special Operations. This training program prepares U.S. intelligence agents and military officers to respond effectively to unexpected, chaotic challenges.

Thirty years of research warns that every day spent at a public elementary school is accompanied by declines in student independence, adaptability and resilience. Traditional schools teach logical thinking based on past experiences that is similar to how computer databases work.

U.S. Army Special Operations trains recruits to reclaim those abilities, essentially by rediscovering the intuitive and imaginative way they looked at the world as children.

When Special Operations members compete against AI-generated strategic responses in war games, the Special Operations members routinely defeat AI.

The last part of Primal Intelligence is devoted to how readers can develop their own intuitive and imaginative thinking skills. For example, reading science fiction encourages us to project our thinking to future scenarios. Fletcher points out that almost all intuitive and imaginative thinkers of the past, including Albert Einstein, Nicola Tesla, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Paine, Abraham Lincoln, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Winston Churchill, Vincent Van Gogh and Steve Jobs were avid readers of William Shakespeare's works.

The book concludes with a self-assessment quiz.
